Devlog#3: 3D Studio R4
This week on my devlog hw stuff... We watched THIS video:
And here's the questions we gotta answer this week:
- Why do you think the user make renders at 2:22 and 3:18? Why do you think we don’t regularly make renders when working in Blender today?
- Which functions / buttons from 3DS 4 are in Blender too? Name at least 3 similarities.
- What year is 3DS 4 from? Google / name two 3D games from that year.
- Google any 3D modeling tool other than Max, Maya, or Blender. What's it called? Who uses it? Would YOU want to use it?
So first of all, that video was pretty cool especially because of how quick creating those 3D models seemed. The user probably created renders just to test how it looked before moving on to the next step of their process. We probably don't make renders in Blender because we can kinda see how it looks like already with Blenders different view options. The model the user was making looked like a wireframe and Blender can have people view wireframes *and* renders without waiting for a long time. 3DS 4 and Blender both can move objects, apply materials to certain parts of 3D models, and they can mirror objects as well so you can just create half of a model instead of the whole thing. It makes having symmetrical cups way easier to make.
According to my research, it appears the 3D Studio R4 came out in 1995 and two 3D games that were out back then were 3D Lemmings and Twisted Metal. Personally, a different 3D modeling tool I think is pretty neat is Voxatron. It's technically a game engine, but you can create 3D models out of voxels! Game designers use it to make games and I wanna use it because sometimes I really want to use different software other than Unity. Also, Voxatron limits the designer to a certain amount of color, lines of code etc. so it'd be interesting to challenge myself to make a 3D game with limitations like that.
